《历史的概要》又译为《世界史纲》，是威尔斯写给历史爱好者的简明读本，以开阔的视野、轻快简洁的笔调将自生命起源以来的生物及人类历史，有条不紊地展现在读者面前。本书的意图在于“以平直的方式，向普通人展示，如果文明要想延续下去，政治、社会和经济组织发展成为世界性联盟是何以不可避免的”。而其一个主题就是要说明，世界只有通过教育而不是战争和革命才能得以拯救。
